(32 or 64 bit) but doesn't' as I have windows update set at 'Default' the recommended setting.

This is best because windows update has on many occasions installed the incorrect updates for my system all the way back to Windows 95 and now it still does this in Win 7. At least in this setting you are able to check the updates before they are installed and screw up your computer. As I have found updates meant for Vista on my XP comp, and XP updates on my win 7 comp. Having the wrong updates installed can cause some serious issues, especially when they can't be removed!
A word of caution that I have not seen anyone give is NEVER TRUST MICROSOFT TO MAKE THE CORRECT DECISION CONCERNING YOUR COMPUTER. They will not be there to fix it when they make a mistake, that they leave to you. This statement is also untrue, as it will not only install it, It will install without any warning or notification what so ever!
